How to Choose the Best Server Cabinet

Cable Source • Jun 02, 2021

If you've decided to install a server cabinet, then you should take time to work out exactly what kind of unit you need. If you make the right choice, you'll get a long-term and cost-effective solution that meets your requirements.

Before you start looking at products, ask yourself the following questions.

What will you put in the cabinet?

To some extent, the devices you'll store in a communications cabinet or rack dictate the size of unit you should buy. You need to choose a unit with the right amount of space and the right number of slots for the devices it will hold.

A small server won't take up much space. However, if you have a larger server or want to put other comms and networking pieces in the cabinet, then you need a bigger cabinet with more slots.

Don't be tempted to cram all your equipment in a small cabinet. You need space to work on your equipment. Plus, if you overfill a cabinet, then its internal temperature might get too high.

While you don't want to waste money on a cabinet that is too big, it makes sense to buy some extra space here. You might need to put new equipment in the cabinet in the future, so some room for growth might be useful.

The weight of the equipment you'll store in the cabinet also matters. If you put too much weight in the unit, it might buckle. So, estimate the total weight of the devices you'll store before you start looking at products.

Where will you put the cabinet?

You also need to think about where the cabinet will go before you choose a unit. The space you have available plays a part in your final decision.

For example, if you want to install a freestanding unit, then you need both floor and wall space. If you decide to use a wall-mounted option, then you need sufficient space on a convenient wall to hang the cabinet.

If you're short on space, then you can switch to buying multiple cabinets or racks. For example, you could install a smaller freestanding rack and some wall-mounted cabinets. You'll have to split your equipment between units, but this solution allows you to maximise the space you have.

The environment around the cabinet also influences your buying decision. You don't want the cabinet or its contents to be exposed to a lot of dust. You also need to think about how to keep your equipment from overheating.

For example, if you have a server room with a robust ventilation and temperature control system, then a cabinet with basic vents should be enough. However, you might need to look for additional features if your cabinet will sit in a regular room without environmental controls.

For example, you might want to look at units that have exhaust fans as well as vents. Cabinets that have perforated sides also allow heat to escape rather than building up around your equipment.

How much security do you need?

Your server, networking and comms equipment keep your business running, so you need to give them some security.

Think about the room or space in which you'll store these pieces. If you have a dedicated server room with a good-quality lock and restricted access, then you don't need to worry so much about securing your server cabinet.

However, if you'll put the unit in a more open or unsecured environment, then look for cabinets that have key, coded or thumb locks. A locking unit keeps your equipment safe.
